Pre-Algebra uses the fundamental skills learned in Foundations to build an understanding of the basic concepts in Algebra. Two new number families are introduced: the integers and the rational numbers. Students learn the difference between a number and a variable, and how to solve simple equations with one variable. Students will be able to write inequalities with one variable and graph them on a number line. Using the cartesian plane, students will be able to plot coordinate points, find the slope of a line between two points and write its equation. Students will gain further practice with decimals and percent, and solve problems involving simple and compound interest. Simple polynomials are introduced, which students will learn to add, subtract, and use the distributive property to multiply. New topics in two-dimensional geometry include the Pythagorean Theorem, circumference and area of a circle, and area and perimeter of irregular shapes. Students will learn that surface area and volume are the three-dimensional analogues of perimeter and area and be able to calculate them for several 3D objects. Finally, students are introduced to the concept of probability and will calculate the odds of independent and dependent events.
