You can enrich your children’s homeschool experience by including the study of a foreign country. Include various foods, cultures, and traditions that people in the country celebrate. Does your child have a natural curiosity about a specific country? If not, this would be your opportunity to take your child to the local library and look through the vast array of Foreign Studies.
Once you and your child agree on a foreign country, check out as many books on that topic as possible. You may even want to check out videos, movies, and documentaries while checking out the reference books at the library.
3 Reasons to Study Foreign Countries
- Teach your child about the world around them so they can learn how other cultures live, work, and play. Foreign Studies is an excellent way for your child to learn how to appreciate others who are different.
- Foreign Studies will show your children how to appreciate the unique history, family, and way of life that others subscribe to. While also showing your children how to be more appreciative of the world in which they live and the freedoms they enjoy.
- This will show your children how to respect and appreciate others that are not like them.
Once your child picks out their foreign country, allow them to learn more about how those people live, including their culture and the types of food that they grow. Make the curriculum fun by including various activities such as interactive workbooks and audio or video documentaries. Another way to make this foreign study enjoyable is to listen to an audio of how they speak and encourage your child to dress how they dress.
When the children learn interactive and hands-on skills, you give them new ways to learn and retain information. Learning about other cultures and ways of life in other countries should be a fun and enjoyable homeschool lesson.
It is also a great way to involve the entire family, such as everyone sitting together to learn the language or allowing your student to put on a skit or play using the new information they’ve learned. Depending on your child’s age and maturity, you may even allow them free rein on the types of meals they cook and the costume design to reflect that country’s traditions. Be sure to incorporate a variety of resources.
- Videos of their lifestyles
- Documentaries
- Audio recordings
- Cookbooks
- Television channels from that country
- Coloring books and other textbooks
Invite a homeschooling family to join you in this study. Each family would be responsible for providing and sharing an element with the entire group. When multiple people participate in a group study, it’s more enjoyable, and the students learn to work together as a team.
